Recording Equipment
Since the first recordings of sound were made, few fields of human technological endeavour have been more passionately pursued than the design of audio recording equipment. Right from the start, the search was on for technological breakthroughs to improve frequency response and to increase the realism of audio recordings by such advances as stereo - first used in a 1938 Judy Garland film, Listen Darling (MGM).
By the late 40s, multitrack recording equipment was in widespread use. Instead of disc masters Magnetic tape was the ubiquitous medium.
Much easier to manipulate than disc masters, popular music and popular musicians had no sooner got hold of this new technology than they began to experiment with it. A great deal of music published in mono only was remastered using the so-called “fake stereo” technique – directing high frequency signal to one track, and low frequency to the other. This and countless tricks and workarounds entered the culture of sound recording, and makers obliged by building them into future recording equipment designs.
Of course the modern sound recording industry can be said to date from the arrival of digital technology, which wrought a transformation similar to that wrought by tape half a century earlier. The digital watershed brought an explosion in the possibilities for sound recording, including a plethora of effects, sampling abilities and so on, that allowed single musicians to create rich soundscapes. As jam-along tools, these have been integrated into digital recorders with modes for rehearsal, performance and capturing performance.
The digital revolution also introduced practical sound recording equipment at prices that many could afford, and a range of highly portable digital recorders that make it possible to capture live gigs in high quality sound, using hardware that will fit easily into your pocket.
Music Mart has a comprehensive range of recording equipment and ancillaries, including the most sought after names in the field, such as Zoom, Steinberg and Boss. A popular recording and rehearsal solution is the Zoom H2n Handy Recorder & Accessory Pack. The H2n technology gives pin sharp stereo with natural depth in a pocket device.
We also have a range of multifunctional audio interfaces such as Roland’s UA-33 Tri- Capture. And for those who want a no frills, straight forward yet versatile device, we have the Steinberg CI1 USB Audio interface.
